The Smart Features That Matter
Solar Charging Optimization
Wallbox's Eco-Smart mode is the standout feature. When connected to a compatible solar inverter or energy meter, the charger automatically adjusts charging speed based on available solar production.
During peak solar hours, it charges at full speed using solar energy. When solar production drops (cloudy weather, evening), it reduces charging speed or pauses to avoid drawing from the grid.
In our testing with a 10kW solar system, Eco-Smart mode resulted in approximately 65% of our home charging coming from solar power, compared to about 35% without optimization (just scheduled charging during daytime hours).
Power Sharing
If your household has two EVs, Wallbox power sharing is excellent. Two Pulsar Plus units share available electrical capacity dynamically. When only one car is charging, it gets full power. When both charge simultaneously, they split the available capacity.
This means you can charge two EVs on a single 60A circuit that would normally only support one charger. The trade-off is slower charging for each car, but for overnight charging this is usually fine.
Scheduled Charging and Energy Tracking
The Wallbox app handles scheduling and energy tracking adequately. It is not quite as polished as ChargePoint's app — the interface feels slightly more complex — but all the same functions are available.
Compact Design
The Pulsar Plus is significantly smaller than competitors. At roughly 8 x 5 x 8 inches, it is about half the size of a ChargePoint Home Flex. This matters in tight garage spaces or when wall mounting near other items.
Charging Performance
At 48A, it delivers approximately 36 miles of range per hour — slightly slower than ChargePoint's 50A/37mph but faster than Grizzl-E's 40A/30mph. In practice, the 1 mph difference between 48A and 50A charging is negligible.
Build Quality
The compact housing feels sturdy but lighter than competitors. The 25-foot cable is the longest in the premium charger category. After 8 months, the cable and connector show no signs of wear.
What Could Be Better
- App complexity — The Wallbox app has more features but is less intuitive than ChargePoint
- Solar setup requirement — Eco-Smart mode requires a compatible energy meter or solar inverter, adding cost
- Connection reliability — We experienced occasional WiFi disconnections (about once per week), requiring app restart
- No amperage adjustment — Unlike ChargePoint, you cannot reduce the amperage via the app
The Verdict
The Wallbox Pulsar Plus is the best choice for homes with solar panels or multiple EVs. The Eco-Smart solar optimization is genuinely useful and unavailable from competitors, and power sharing enables two-EV households without expensive panel upgrades.
For homes without solar or a second EV, the ChargePoint Home Flex offers a better app experience and faster charging at a similar price.
Rating: 8.9/10
FAQ
Does Eco-Smart mode require specific solar equipment? It works with most modern solar inverters and energy monitoring systems. Wallbox publishes a compatibility list on their website.
Can I use power sharing with different Wallbox models? Power sharing works between Pulsar Plus units only. You cannot mix Wallbox models for power sharing.
How does the Wallbox compare to Tesla Wall Connector? The Wallbox works with all EVs (J1772 connector), offers solar integration, and has power sharing. The Tesla Wall Connector only works natively with Teslas, has no solar mode, but offers Tesla-specific power sharing and tighter car integration.
